Melasma

Melasma is a common skin condition that affects both men and women and is commonly associated with pregnancy. Identified by dark pigmentation on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and upper lip, melasma is often caused by hormonal changes and sun exposure.

Melasma is not painful, but it can affect your self-esteem. It does not go away on its own, so it is necessary to see a board-certified dermatologist for a diagnosis and to get proper treatment.

What Causes Melasma?

Melasma is often associated with hormonal shifts, such as pregnancy or taking birth control pills, but it can also be caused by sun exposure, certain medications, or even stress. At MI Skin Dermatology in Washington, D.C., we offer a variety of topical and oral medical dermatology treatments to address and treat melasma, in addition to chemical peels, microneedling, microdermabrasion, PRP, medical-grade skincare products, and lasers.

Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels are designed to remove the top layers of the skin, revealing fresh, brighter skin beneath. Since melasma tends to affect the topmost layers of the skin, removing dead skin cells and unwanted pigment in the top layers of the skin.

Depending on the severity and depth of the pigmentation, your provider may recommend a series of chemical peels or a combination of treatments to achieve best results.

DermaSweep Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion with DermaSweep exfoliates skin, removing dead skin cells to reveal brighter, firmer skin with no downtime. This gentle treatment helps remove unwanted pigment by removing the topmost layers of the skin to reveal refreshed skin beneath.

Medical-Grade Skincare Products

Our providers offer a wide variety of medical-grade skincare products designed to protect and brighten the skin. When used on their own or in combination with medical dermatology treatments, topical skincare products can help you achieve and maintain brighter, healthier, more even-toned skin over time.

Sun Protection

One of the most effective ways of preventing melasma from worsening is to apply an SPF sunblock daily. The providers at MI Skin Dermatology can recommend the best sun protective products to suit your unique skin type.

Lasers

Dr. Melda Isaac or Dr. Daniel Yanes, board-certified dermatologists in Washington, DC, offer a variety of laser skin treatments designed to address pigmentation and melasma. During your consultation, they can perform a full skin assessment and determine the best treatment for your skin.

Fraxel®

This revolutionary laser skin resurfacing treatment uses different treatment options to address pigmentation and texture. Fraxel re:pair is the most powerful treatment and achieves the most noticeable results, refreshing skin and addressing more severe skin pigmentation concerns. Fraxel DUAL addresses sun damage and age spots, revealing fresher, renewed skin.

LaseMD Ultra®

LaseMD Ultra is a laser treatment designed to address pigmentation and texture changes with little to no downtime. It is safe for use on all skin types and can be used year-round to treat melasma and other pigmentation concerns.

By creating micro-channels in the skin, the LaseMD laser triggers your body’s natural healing response, resulting in a breakdown of unwanted pigment and an improvement in skin’s tone and texture as your body generates new collagen and elastin following your treatment.

PicoLO Premium™ Laser

The PicoLO Premium laser is designed to address unwanted pigment without downtime. This gentle picotoning treatment works within the top layers of the skin to break up pigmentation caused by melasma, resulting in smoother, more even skin tone after a series of treatments.
