Mole Removal
Moles are extremely common dark marks that appear on the skin. Moles can be present from birth or can develop later in life. They are often harmless and can range in color from very light brown to almost black depending on your pigmentation and ethnicity. It is important to have your moles checked annually by a board-certified dermatologist like Dr. Melda Isaac and Dr. Daniel Yanes in Washington, DC.
If you have a mole that has changed in size shape or color, Dr. Isaac and Dr. Yanes recommend scheduling a consultation to have it assessed and potentially removed. In some cases, changes to a mole’s appearance can signal skin cancer, so it’s important to have your moles checked regularly. Early detection of skin cancer is essential to increasing cure rate.
Types of Moles
Moles come in many sizes, shapes, and colors. They can be flat, slightly raised, or appear like a polyp.
Moles can appear anywhere on the body, even in sun protected areas of your body, like the bottom of your foot. If you are bothered by the appearance of a mole or are concerned that recent changes may be a sign of skin cancer, it is important to seek out a board-certified dermatologist to remove the mole.
- Dark moles are commonly found on the skin of men and women, and may be present from birth or appear later in life due to sun exposure.
- Skin tags are often raised flaps of tissue on a stalk that may or may not be dark in color.
- Freckles are lighter pigmentation spots found on the face, chest, and arms. These often fade seasonally after reduced sun exposure. Moles do not darken or fade with sun exposure.
During your consultation, Dr. Isaac or Dr. Yanes will assess your mole(s) and determine whether or not they are dangerous and determine the appropriate treatment.
Mole Treatments
Dr. Isaac and Dr. Yanes recommend using surgery to remove moles. The mole is then sent to a pathologist for testing. Melanocytes, moles, have the potential to develop into melanoma, so it is very important to have an annual mole check with a board-certified dermatologist.
If you have a mole that has recently changed in shape, color, or size, contact your dermatologist immediately to schedule a consultation to have it checked and potentially removed.
